BRIXHAM HARBOUR - MARINA
Brixham in South Devon is the jewel in the English Riviera. A traditional fishing town, Brixham has a long history of fishing and smuggling and is home to the Brixham heritage fleet built around an attractive harbour and is a popular year-round destination. Brixham is at one end of Torbay, across from Torquay and Paignton Also close by to Brixham are the South Hams, including Dartmouth, Kingswear, Totnes, Bigbury and, of course, the beauty of Dartmoor. Brixham has attractive narrow lanes around the harbour, with residential streets on the higher hills either side from which there are great views across Torbay. Berry Head park, about a 30 minute walk from the centre of Brixham, is great for walking and has stunning views back to Brixham harbour, across Torbay and along the coast to the South Hams. The harbour and Brixham Marina are great for a leisurely stroll, or a spot of crab fishing for the young at heart, or for the more adventurous Brixham is on the South West Coastal Path. Leave Brixham and head via Churston to Paignton or from the Berry Head take the invigorating walk up and down hills to Kingswear. In summer the town is buzzing with activity but Brixham is a great place to visit all year round. There are lots of local attractions open and the beaches and pathways around Brixham are especially nice in the spring and summer. For the coast lover, Brixham is a perfect getaway. |

QUAYWEST WATERPARK
Quaywest Waterpark gives real credence to Paignton as a superb South Devon family holiday favourite. Quaywest is a pretty flash waterpark, with all it's water nicely heated to 80 degrees centigrade so it's nice and warm for the tots to compensate for the urr cooler English weather! Whats on offer - way hey Wild Kamikaze rides, or gentler surfing lagoon anyone? There's a variety of flumes and tubes, pools and various out of the water entertainment. The Devils Drop ride has a 65' freefall (part of which is through a blackhole!)- gadzooks! On the less hell-raising side, opt for the tube rides which include the Raging Rapids. This Devon Waterpark caters for children of all ages. For the younger tots there's a submarine play area and the Toon Town Pool - whoppee!! For general swimming, what superb choice you have of safe pools for both children and adults, and Quaywest Waterpark is right next to Goodrington Beach. As you'd expect at a fully equipped family waterpark there are plenty of food outlets with anything from hotdogs, burgers, ice cream and fish and chips. You can bring your own picnics as well, but no alchohol or glass containers allowed. |

THE GOLDEN HIND
The Golden Hind Ship, classically remembered as a ship captured by Frances Drake and on which he was knighted by Elizabeth I on 4th April 1581, had been reconstructed and sits open to the public every day in Brixham Harbour. A visit to the Golden Hind (originally called the Pelican, but renamed by Drake) offers an intriguing insight into life on board a ship in the 16th century. It's very popular with school trips and with children, offering a 'come alive' educational angle. It's hard to imagine the gravity of circumnavigating the world, and the hero status brought upon Sir Frances Drake for achieving it, in this day and age. But perhaps a trip to this ship helps to imagine just that, and the skill and achievement involved in it without the aide of steam power and so forth. Drake's navigation of the Magellan Straits is now considerably well mythologized in the history lessons. Those interested in finding out more about the Elizabethan period, Sir Frances Drake's many successful voyages returning home with bounty taken from many a Spanish ship, and the part Drake played in establishing trade lines with the Far East and India - will not be disappointed by a visit to the reconstructed Golden Hind. There's much a plenty going on for the kids as well, with the usual pirate exploits. |
